Four Net Double Figures At Evangel

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The York University men's basketball team lost a hard-fought 83-80 contest at Evangel Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 7-15 overall, including 5-11 in league play.

Head coach Tree Burks' team was led by Devin Carroll's 17 points. DJ Leaks added 16 points to go along with a pair of steals. Dwight Glover notched 14 points and five rebounds while Jaden Henderson scored 11 points before fouling out. 

Salvador Fernandez accounted for seven points while Andrew Bennett and Devondre Mayfield each scored six points. Bennett snagged eight boards in the contest while Rhino Hernandez dished out five assists. 

Down 24-16, Carroll hit all three free throws at the 7:25 mark to make it a five-point game. Trailing 26-19, Leaks converted a lay-up before Glover's three-ball pulled the team within two at 26-24. The Valor led 43-34 prior to Carroll hitting a free throw with 58 seconds to play to make it a 43-35 game at the half.

Evangel led 54-37 but Leaks hit Carroll for a three-point basket. Mayfield's lay-up off a pass from Hernandez made it a 12-point game. Carroll's lay-up with 12:39 to play cut the deficit to nine momentarily. 

Trailing 75-62 with just over 4:00 to play, Henderson converted a lay-up. With 3:55 to go, Glover made an old-fashioned three-point play to slice the deficit to eight, 75-67. Down by 10, 79-69, Glover and Leaks each canned shots to pull within six.

The Panthers pulled within three when Glover made a lay-up at the 1:06 mark but the home team extended the score to 83-78. Leaks hit a jumper with 22 ticks on the clock for the final tally. 

For the game, York hit 28-of-57 from the floor (49.1 percent), including nine-of-24 (37.5 percent) from distance. The squad was nearly automatic from the charity stripe, hitting 15-of-17 (88.2 percent). The Panthers corralled 35 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive glass. The team dished out 15 assists and recorded nine second-chance points.
