YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team recorded a hard-fought 79-76 victory over Avila Wednesday evening.
The Panthers are now 8-15 overall, including 6-11 in league play.
Head coach
Tree Burks' team was led by
Dwight Glover's 22-point, seven-rebound, four-assist, four-steal performance.
Jaden Henderson notched 14 points and eight boards while
Trevon Dennis accounted for 10 points.
Cam Clardy netted nine markers while
Devondre Mayfield chipped in eight points and five boards in the win.
York trailed 10-8 in the early going but
Jordan Marble took a pass from
Salvador Fernandez and buried a three-ball at the 13:57 mark for an 11-10 lead. Avila bounced back and scored five straight before Clardy nailed a jumper, once again making it a two-point game with 12:28 to go.
The Eagles maintained a 26-17 lead before Glover hit two free throws. At the 8:02 mark, Glover found the bottom of the net from downtown, pulling the home team within four at 26-22. Trailing 31-26, Clardy got things going with a free throw. Dennis converted a lay-up as did Glover. Clardy's jumper propelled the Panthers to a 33-31 lead at the 3:54 mark.
Down 34-33, Dennis took a pass from Mayfield and nailed a jumper. Henderson's inside bucket extended the lead to three. Henderson responded to an Avila basket with a field goal for a 39-36 margin at the break.
Tied at 53-53, Mayfield canned a jumper off a pass from Glover. He made the ensuing free throw for the three-point play. Up by one, 56-55, Mayfield hit a basket and
Trevon Dennis nailed a shot from downtown for a six-point edge at the 10:07 mark.
Avila pulled within three at 68-65 but
Rhino Hernandez converted a lay-up. Up by three, Mayfield hit a free throw and Glover sliced through the defense for a lay-up at the 3:36 mark for a six-point margin, 73-67.
The Eagles slowly cut into the deficit. York led 75-74 before Glover buried two charity tosses with just 96 seconds remaining. However, Avila answered with a lay-up. The Panthers were fouled with 21 seconds to go and Glover hit both charity tosses for a three-point lead, 79-76.
With less than two seconds to go, Avila had a chance to tie the game but a strong defensive stand forced a turnover, securing the victory.
For the game, York hit 29-of-59 from the floor (49.2 percent), including nine-of-26 (34.6 percent) from distance. The squad was nearly automatic from the free throw line, burying 12-of-14 (85.7 percent). The Panthers outrebounded the visitors 33-26. York dished out 15 assists in the game and held a 12-6 edge in second-chance points.
