GULVER, Texas – The York University baseball team lost a pair of games to Oklahoma Panhandle State Sunday by scores of 9-2 and 7-6.
The Panthers are now 2-2 on the young season.
In game one, York trailed 2-0 in the third inning when
Mateo Sierras rocketed a solo round tripper over the right center field wall to make it 2-1.
Ian Heck knotted the score in the fourth stanza when he launched a homer to right center field.
OPSU regained the advantage in the bottom of the fourth, plating two runs for a 4-2 edge. The home squad plated five runs in the sixth stanza for the final tally.
The visitors tallied two runs on five hits.
For the game,
Tyren Dorrance, Heck,
Sam Hodoly, Sierras and
Isaac Stark registered hits.
Heck worked four innings and had three strikeouts.
Fred Juden tossed an inning and had a strikeout while
Owen McClung worked a frame and had two strikeouts.
In game two, the Aggies scored three runs in the first inning but the Panthers battled back in the top of the second stanza. Sierras reached on an error and
Austin Grant pulled the squad within one with a two-run blast to right center field to make it 3-2.
Trailing 6-2 in the fourth,
Ryan Romero walked and hustled to second on a single by Heck. Sierras was hit by a pitch to load the bags. Grant ripped a single up the middle, plating one.
Nicholas DeMonte recorded a sacrifice fly to pull the Panthers within two at 6-4.
York knotted the contest in the sixth inning.
Jose Martinez reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A base hit from
Secundino Morales put runners on the corners. A groundout by Dorrance made it 6-5. Morales scored with two down to tie the contest.
In the bottom of the frame, the Aggies drew a walk and an error put two runners on. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move up 90 feet but the pitching was up for the task.
James Mockry forced a fly ball for the first out. Another miscue allowed a base runner to reach safely while what turned out to be the game-winning run came home. Mockry got the next Aggie to pop up to the catcher for the final out.
York continued to battle and Romero drew a lead-off walk. However, a fly ball and a double play ended the game.
James McCown got the start and worked three frames. He struck out two batters while Mockry tossed the final three innings. He struck out three batters in the game.
At the plate, York was led by Morales' three-hit performance. Grant and Heck each had two hits in the contest. Grant led the way with three RBI.
For the contest, the Panthers tallied six runs on nine hits.
York returns to action Friday when the team plays at the College of the Ozarks for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
