York Records Sensational Double-Overtime Victory Over Avila

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team recorded a thrilling 79-74 double-overtime victory over Avila Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 6-15 overall, including 5-12 in league action.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Audrey Hernandez's 13 points. Imani Honey added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Xuriyah Harry and Britney Schroer accounted for 10 points apiece in the win.

Pasiko Hvichiani controlled the second overtime, scoring all but two of the team's points. Overall, she accounted for nine points.  

Down 9-3, Schroer nailed a jumper. Ashley Rubio added a lay-up with 4:33 to go in the first quarter, pulling the team within two. Trailing 15-10, Imani Honey converted a lay-up as well as a free throw, making it 15-13. Xuriyah Harry's jumper off a pass from Alliyana Page with four ticks on the clock pulled the home team within three at 18-15 heading into the second quarter.

Avila held a 25-17 edge but Hvichiani's lay-up sliced the deficit to six with 58 seconds to go in the half. Page converted a free throw with 45 seconds on the clock but the Eagles maintained a 26-20 advantage at the break.

Avila held a 44-30 lead but Audrey Hernandez canned back-to-back three-point buckets off assists from Imani Honey. Shepherd's lay-up made it a 44-38 game at the 2:47 mark of the third quarter. Down 49-43, Shepherd hit two free throws before Hernandez's basket made it a two-point game. Avila hit two free throws to go up 51-48 entering the fourth frame.

Down 57-53, Harry made a pair of inside shots, knotting the score at 57-57, but the visitors regained a four-point edge with 2:50 to play. York trailed 65-61 with 19 seconds to go and Hernandez answered the bell with a three-point bucket off a pass from Harry. With 14 seconds to play, Honey hit a free throw, knotting the score at 65-65 to force overtime.

Harry gave the Panthers a two-point edge in overtime off a pass from Monique Contreras at the 4:16 mark. Honey's two charity tosses pushed the advantage to four, 69-65. The Eagles outscored York 6-2 down the stretch but the home team had a chance to win the game in the first overtime session. However, the squad missed a pair of free throws late, forcing a second extra period.

York's stingy defense allowed just three points in the second session. Hvichiani started the scoring with a free throw. She added a lay-up and free throw before the visitors answered with a three-ball, making it 75-74. Hivichiani buried two more free throws with 2:12 to play for a three-point edge. Neither team could score again until Shepherd sealed the game with two charity tosses with six seconds to play.

For the game, York hit 24-of-57 (42.1 percent) from the floor. The squad made four three-point shots. The Panthers also connected on 27-of-39 (69.2 percent) from the charity stripe. York scored 16 points off turnovers and controlled the paint, 34-16.
