YORK, Neb. – The York University softball team split a doubleheader with KCAC foe Bethel Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers won the first game 2-0 before falling 8-2 in extra innings in the nightcap.
The Panthers are now 3-15 on the season, including 1-1 in KCAC action.
In the first game,
Bailey Hardey was outstanding in the circle. She tossed a complete game, picking up the shutout. Hardey scattered five hits and had a pair of strikeouts while walking just one person for the victory.
The defense was spectacular for York as Hardey forced batters into 14 groundouts and five fly ball outs in the shutout.
York took the lead in the fourth with the only runs of the game. With two down,
Nevaeh Reed drew a walk and moved to second when
Carla Martinez singled to center field.
Sofia Perez loaded the bags with her base knock to center field. A walk to
Sariah Ayala pushed across Reed for what turned out to be the winning run.
Katie Taylor's infield hit allowed Martinez to race home for the 2-0 win.
For the game, Ayala, Martinez, Perez, Reed and Taylor had hits in the game. Ayala and Taylor drove in runs while Martinez and Reed scored in the win.
In game two, York trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth stanza. With one down, Perez belted a solo home run to center field, slicing the deficit to one.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh. With two away,
Breanna Underwood drew a walk. A throwing error allowed her to race around the base paths and cross home, forcing extra innings.
Doane plated six runs in the eighth inning for the 8-2 extra inning victory.
For the game,
Paige Chapman and Perez had two hits apiece. Perez notched a home run while Anderson tallied a double.
In the circle, Hardey worked the first four innings and had a strikeout.
Malia Alvarez tossed the final four frames and took the loss. She had a pair of strikeouts in the game.
