Panthers split with Bulldogs in KCAC action

MCPHERSON, Kan. – The York University baseball team split a doubleheader at McPherson College Saturday.

York lost the first game 8-7 before bouncing back to win the nightcap 4-0.

The Panthers are now 9-15 on the year and 1-10 in KCAC action.

York jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first two frames. Austin Grant started the game off with a double and scored on a Secundino Morales double to left field. Cesar Galvan singled in Morales for a 2-0 edge. Two batters later, Galvan scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ryan Romero. Trever Peterson completed the scoring when he knocked in Daniel Polo on a single.

In the second inning, Cameron Reeve singled to center field and trotted home when Morales crushed a two-run round-tripper for the six-run advantage.

McPherson scored one in the second and three in the third but the Panthers got the run back in the top of the fourth stanza. Reeve walked and moved to second when Grant reached on an error. Morales knocked in Reeve via a single to center field for a 7-4 margin.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the fourth and two in the sixth, knotting the score at 7-7. The home team scored a run in the seventh and held on for the 8-7 victory.

For the game, Morales led the way with three hits, including a homer and a double. He led the way with four RBI. He and Reeve each crossed home twice in the contest.

On the mound, James McCown worked 5.1 innings and had six strikeouts. Cole Doebele And Owen McClung each worked on the mound. Doebele threw two-thirds of an inning before McClung tossed the final two stanzas.

In game two, York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second stanza. Romero started things off with an infield single. Moments later, he moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a base hit by Reeve. Peyton Pinedo, who came in for a pinch runner for Nicholas DeMonte, also scored on the play, for the two-run advantage.

With outstanding pitching, the score remained the same until the Panthers broke through for two more runs in the fifth inning. Grant walked and moved to second on Galvan's base hit. After a wild pitch allowed both runners to move up a bag, Polo drove in Grant on a sacrifice fly. Romero's single to right field plated Galvan for the 4-0 lead the squad would not relinquish.

For the game, Galvan, Reeve and Romero had two hits apiece. Reeve registered a double.

On the mound, Ian Heck went the distance in the seven-inning victory. He had nine strikeouts and gave up just three walks while scattering three hits in the shutout win.
