Panthers score nine runs in the ninth for come-from-behind win

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The York University baseball team used a nine-run ninth inning to knock off Avila by a score of 14-11 Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 10-16 on the season while Avila falls to 13-15.

York took the lead in the top of the first. Austin Grant doubled down the right field line and scored two batters later when Cesar Galvan ripped a single to center field. Tied at 1-1 in the second stanza, Trevor Peterson blasted a solo home run over the right field wall with two away, giving the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

Tied at 2-2 in the fifth inning, Grant registered a two-out double. Secundino Morales put the visitors on top with a towering two-run home run to right field for a 4-2 lead.

Trailing 8-4 in the eighth, Morales blasted his second round-tripper of the day – this time a solo affair – to make it an 8-5 contest.

Trailing 11-5 heading into the ninth inning, the Panthers posted nine runs for the come-from behind victory.

Peterson recorded a one-out single. Connor Larson came in as a pinch hitter and promptly blasted a two-run home run, making it 11-7. Cameron Reeve continued the offensive firepower with a double to center field and moved to third on a Grant base knock.

After a pitching change, Morales doubled in Reeve. Galvan launched a three-run homer, knotting the game at 11-11. Another pitching change did nothing to silence the Panthers' bats. Daniel Polo doubled. A walk to Ryan Romero put two runners on for Ian Heck, who belted a three-run home run for a 14-11 advantage.

Avila threatened in the bottom of the ninth, but an infield pop-up ended the game.

For the game, Galvan, Grant and Morales led the way with three hits apiece. Galvan and Morales each drove in four while Heck had three RBI. Grant and Morales crossed home three times apiece in the victory.

On the mound, Thomas Fogle worked 4.2 innings and had a strikeout. Owen McClung tossed two-thirds of an inning while Marce Vasquez worked 1.2 innings. Jackson Van Roekel worked an inning and picked up the win while James Mockry threw the ninth frame to get the save.

The Panthers return to action Thursday when they host Kansas Wesleyan in the first game of the series starting at 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
