Panthers split day one at Friends Invite with Anderson's long ball

WICHITA, Kan. – The York University softball team split a doubleheader Friday, falling 16-7 to Park before racing past Dakota State 10-2 in the nightcap.

The Panthers are now 2-11 on the season.

Against Park, York trailed 3-0 going into the top of the second but the squad quickly responded with a five-run second inning. Nevaeh Reed got things going with a single and moved to third on Sofia Perez's double to left. A Carla Martinez sacrifice fly made it 1-0. With the bases loaded, Kennedie Anderson uncorked a grand slam for a 5-3 lead.

Up 5-4, Reed was the catalyst in the third with a single. She moved to second when Perez reached on an error. After a Martinez single loaded the bags, Katie Taylor drew a walk, plating a run for a two-score advantage.

Park plated eight runs in the fourth and one in the fifth for a 13-6 lead. However, the Panthers continued to battle. In the sixth, Paige Chapman singled, moved to second on Breanna Underwood's base knock and scampered to third on a groundout. Reed drove her in on a groundout to make it 13-7 but the home team scored three runs in the bottom of the inning for the 16-7 victory.

Against Dakota State, York took a 3-0 lead in the first stanza and never looked back. An error put Anderson on first with one down. After Chapman and Underwood got on base, Reed singled home two. Two batters later, Underwood scored when Tricia Trice reached on an error.

Anderson blasted a two-run homer in the second, driving in Taylor. Up 5-1 in the third, Taylor walked with the bases loaded, plating Perez. A wild pitch allowed Torstensen to cross home prior to a sacrifice fly by Anderson, propelling the visitors to an 8-1 lead.

Up 8-2 in the fifth, the Panthers pushed across two runs for the victory. With two on base, Chapman roped a double to center field, driving in Taylor and Sariah Ayala for the game-winning run.
