YORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team completed the three-game sweep of Southwestern on Saturday, picking up a 13-3 victory in the opener before garnering a 4-3 win in the final game of the series.
The Panthers are now 13-19 overall, including 5-14 in KCAC action.
York trailed 2-0 but split the deficit in half with a run in the second inning when
Ian Heck led off the stanza with a homer over the left field wall. Two innings later,
Ryan Romero singled and moved to second on a walk to Heck.
Nicholas DeMonte was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Sam Hodoly reached on a fielder's choice and an error allowed Romero and Heck to cross home plate.
Cameron Reeve lifted a fly ball to left field, driving in DeMonte. Moments later, a
Secundino Morales double to center field drove in two.
Cesar Galvan's single up the middle drove in Morales for a 7-2 advantage.
York added to the lead in the sixth inning. Reeve started it with a double and moved to third on
Austin Grant's bunt. Morales doubled home both runners. After moving to third, he scored on a wild pitch.
After a walk to Heck to load the bases, DeMonte singled in Galvan. A wild pitch let Romero score and Grant walked to drive in Heck.
Southwestern plated a run in the seventh, but it was not enough in the run-rule victory.
For the game, Morales led the way with three hits, including a homer, while driving in four runs and scoring twice. Galvan, Grant, Reeve and Romero had two hits each. Heck scored three times while Grant and Romero crossed home twice each.
On the mound,
James McCown got the starting nod and went the distance. He had five strikeouts and gave up three runs on nine hits.
In game two, York trailed 2-0 before plating a run in the second inning on a solo home run by Romero.
Galvan tied the game with an RBI single in the second, scoring Grant, who had reached after being hit by a pitch. Heck singled home Morales for a 3-2 lead.
Southwestern knotted the game with a run in the fifth. However, the Panthers regained the advantage in the sixth.
Galvan started the inning off with a single to right field.
Isaac Stark came in as a pinch runner and stole second. After moving to third on Heck's base hit to center field, Romero lifted a fly ball to center field, driving in Stark for a 4-3 margin.
That proved to be enough for
James Mockry, who struck out the final batter after having two on base in the final stanza.
For the game, Galvan led the way with three hits and one RBI. Heck had two hits while Romero drove in two.
On the mound,
Thomas Fogle got the start and picked up the win after going six strong innings. He had four strikeouts and gave up three runs on four hits. Mockry picked up the save. He had a strikeout while tossing the final inning.
