Panthers fall to Coyotes in KCAC play

YORK, Neb. – The York University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Kansas Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon by scores of 5-2 and 12-3.

The Panthers are now 6-32 on the season, including 4-18 in KCAC action.

Head coach Aaron Alvarez's team had a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the first frame. Breanna Underwood doubled to the gap in left center field to open the at bat. She moved to second on Kennedie Anderson's sacrifice bunt. Sofia Perez and Kayla Noelker each walked, loading the bases. However, a strikeout ended the threat.

The Coyotes plated two runs in the second and three in the third for a 5-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, Anderson posted a two-out base knock to left center field and moved to second on a base on balls by Perez, but each was left stranded.

Tricia Trice broke through for the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth when she cranked an offering over the center field wall to make it 5-1. Skylar Gripp singled to right field and moved to second on a groundout. Ariana Barcelo entered as a pinch runner and hustled to third when Underwood singled to left field and moved to second on an error. Emma Morphew walked to load the bases. Anderson reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Barcelo to score.

That was as close as the Panthers could get the rest of the way.

For the game, Underwood led the way with two hits. Perez walked three times in the contest. Trice and Underwood registered extra-base hits.

In the circle, Alex Harwell went the distance and had a pair of strikeouts.

Game two saw the visitors strike for three runs in the second inning and five more in the third for an 8-0 advantage.

York battled back in the bottom of the third. Sariah Ayala led off the inning with a single up the middle. She moved to second two batters later on a groundout. After hustling to third on Anderson's hit back up the middle, Perez ripped a pitch through the left side of the defense, plating Ayala.

The Coyotes scored four more in the fourth for a 12-1 lead.

Alvarez's squad got back on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Paige Chapman singled up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball. After moving to third on a groundout, Perez belted a single to center field, knocking in Chapman. Trice doubled to the gap in right center field, pushing Perez to third. Noelker's sacrifice fly allowed Perez to score for the final run of the contest.
For the game, Ayala and Perez tallied two hits apiece while Perez drove in two.

In the circle, Faith Torstensen got the start and worked three frames. She had a strikeout. Malia Alvarez worked the final two innings for York.
