Panthers battle hard but fall to Spires

SUTTON, Neb. – The York University softball team lost both contests to the University of Saint Mary on Senior day by scores of 12-3 and 6-1.

The Panthers are now 6-34 on the year and 4-20 in KCAC action.

York took a lead in the bottom of the first frame. Breanna Underwood singled up the middle and promptly stole second base. Two batters later, she moved to third on a fly ball. Moments later, Kayla Noelker doubled her home for the one-run margin.

Saint Mary scored three runs in the third and five in the fourth for an 8-1 edge. In the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers added to their total. Kennedie Anderson led off the frame with a double to left center field and moved to third with Noelker's one-out single. Tricia Trice's sacrifice fly made it 8-2.

The visitors scored four runs in the sixth and York managed to score a run in the bottom of the sixth for the 12-3 final. With two own, Anderson ripped a single to left field, which drove in Sariah Ayala to make it a nine-run contest. Ayala reached earlier in the frame on a fielder's choice.

For the game, Anderson tallied three hits, drove in one and scored once. Noelker, Katie Taylor and Underwood all registered two hits.

In the circle, Alex Harwell started and had two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Faith Torstensen worked the final two-thirds of an inning to close out the contest.

Game two saw the visitors take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Stellar play from Faith Torstensen and the defense kept the contest close for the first six innings of work.

In the second inning, Noelker singled through the left side and moved to second on Trice's base hit to right field. However, York was unable to push across any runs in the inning.

The Panthers had an outstanding chance to take the lead in the third. With two down, Anderson recorded an infield hit and moved to second on Sofia Perez's base hit up the middle. Noelker singled to load the bases, but a hard-hit grounder ended the threat.

York had a base runner in the sixth, but back-to-back outs ended the inning. The visitors struck for five runs in the top of the seventh for a six-run cushion.

The Panthers continued to battle as Ayala singled to lead off the seventh stanza. Two batters later, Paige Chapman recorded a single to center field. Anderson's base hit loaded the bags and Perez lifted a sacrifice fly, plating Ayala. The squad was unable to get any closer.

For the game, Anderson, Noelker and Trice had two hits apiece. Perez drove in Ayala for the team's lone run.

In the circle, Torstensen went the distance. She had one strikeout in the game.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday when they conclude the regular season at Sterling College for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Live stats and video at Yorkpanthers.com.
