York sweeps Friends in KCAC doubleheader

YORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team registered a pair of victories Friday afternoon over Friends University, extending the winning streak to six games.

Game scores were 2-1 and 9-4.

The Panthers are now 16-19 on the season, including 8-14 in KCAC action.

York broke through with a run in the fourth inning. Ian Heck led off the frame with a double to right center field. Connor Larson entered as a pinch runner. He promptly trotted to third on a balk and scored on Ryan Romero's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 advantage.

Friends University knotted the score with a run in the sixth inning at 1-1.

The game remained tied through the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Nicholas DeMonte singled to right field. Larson returned as a pinch runner and hustled to second on Trevor Peterson's groundout.

Cameron Reeve ripped a single down the right field line, driving in Larson for the game-winning run.

For the game, Reeve went four-for-four with a double and one RBI. DeMonte and Heck recorded two hits apiece. Heck had a pair of doubles while Larson scored both runs.

On the mound, Heck threw eight innings. He struck out 11 batters while giving up one run on five hits. Heck only walked three. James Mockry worked a scoreless ninth to get the victory.

Game two saw York jump on the board early. Secundino Morales reached base with one away and Cesar Galvan promptly brought him home with a two-run shot over the left field fence.

The Panthers added a run in the second stanza. Daniel Polo doubled to center field to lead off the inning and scored when Reeve belted a two-out single to left field.

The Falcons tied the score with three runs in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the frame, Galvan ripped a two-out double to the gap in right center field. He scored when Heck reached on an error for a 4-3 lead.

The advantage did not last long as the visitors tied the game in the sixth stanza. York responded when Peterson launched a solo homer to straight away center field. DeMonte reached on an error and Reeve singled to put two on. Morales brought everyone home with a round-tripper to left center field. Galvan followed it up with a solo shot down the left field line.  

For the game, Galvan blasted two home runs and drove in three. He scored three times. Morales launched a homer, had three RBI and scored twice. Reeve belted out two hits. Peterson recorded a round-tripper.

James McCown got the start and worked six innings for the win. He struck out seven batters. Mockry tossed a scoreless seventh, securing the victory.
