Panthers Race Past Mount Marty In Season Opener

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's soccer team opened its season with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Mount Marty Friday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 1-0 on the season while the Lancers fall to 0-1.

Head coach Greg Reynolds' and Benny Hanaphy's team got on the board in just the sixth minute of action. Rookie Laia Gallego Balado blasted a shot past the keeper for an early 1-0 advantage at the 5:18 mark. That was more than enough for the home squad, but the Panthers continued applying pressure.

York registered three corner kicks over the next 15 minutes but was unable to get a shot off. Gracie Reynolds belted an attempt at the 36:03 mark only to see it get blocked. Jenna Clarke's shot in the 41st minute was stopped, keeping it a 1-0 contest. Ava Gibson Doyle and Zippora Nigg notched shots in the closing moments of the first half, but the keeper turned away both attempts.

The Panthers continued to push forward in the opening moments of the second period. Reynolds launched a shot, but it was saved at the 46:17 mark.

Rieke Wolff had two opportunities within the first five minutes of the frame, but one was saved while another sailed high of the frame. After Reynolds' shot was stopped, Claudia Montero had two attempts thwarted within a seven-second span. However, Reynolds found Adriana Castellanos Rodrigo for a 2-0 edge with 69:03 showing on the clock.

Reynolds concluded the scoring after finding the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute for the final tally.

For the match, Reynolds had a goal and an assist. Gallego Balado and Rodrigo each found the back of the net in the contest.

Between the pipes, Harumi Cornejo played 78 minutes and stopped all three attempts she faced. Kendall Prieto played 12 minutes, helping preserve the shutout.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Doane University for a 6:30 p.m., contest. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
