CRETE, Neb. – The York University women's soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory at Doane Wednesday evening in the home opener for the Tigers.
The Panthers are now 2-0 on the season while Doane falls to 1-3.
Cleo Paris broke through with the lone goal of the contest at the 83:26 mark. Mackenzie Stricker sent a ball into the penalty area on a free kick. The Tigers' goalkeeper couldn't handle it cleanly before Paris finished the play with the game-winner.
York recorded the first shot of the match in the 33
rd minute off the boot of
Zippora Nigg. However, the keeper was able to thwart the attempt. Just two minutes later,
Lorna Campos blasted a shot, but it sailed wide of the frame.
The Tigers tried to take the lead in the 38
th minute, but a shot missed left of the post. In the 41
st minute,
Harumi Cornejo stopped a shot. Cornejo came up big with just under two minutes to play in the period, keeping the match scoreless entering the second period of action.
Both keepers tallied saves in the first 20 minutes of the final period. After a Panther blocked a shot from the Tigers, York countered with a shot on goal by
McKenzie Stricker. However, it was saved.
Paris found the back of the net for the golden goal in the 84
th minute.
The Panthers' defense stood stout, allowing only a last-second shot on goal, but Cornejo finished off the clean slate with a save at the 89:29 mark.
For the match, York totaled eight shots compared to six by Doane. Each team garnered four shots on goal. The Panthers accounted for four corner kicks compared to just two by the home team.
In goal, Cornejo played all 90 minutes and notched four saves for the shutout.
This year, York has two shutouts, tying the entire shutout total from the 2023 campaign.
