YORK, Neb. – The York University men's soccer team opened its season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mount Marty Friday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 1-0 on the season while the Lancers are 0-3.
The home team registered the first shot of the season in the 13
th minute, but
Diego Yanes' attempt sailed high of the frame. York earned a corner kick in the 18
th minute, but
Jorge Boto's header narrowly missed the goal, keeping the contest scoreless.
A team save by the Lancers in the 28
th minute of action off an attempt by
Matias Trettel kept York off the scoreboard. However, a foul on Mount Marty gave York a penalty kick at the 35:16 mark. Yanes promptly ripped the shot past the keeper for a 1-0 lead and the score would remain the same entering halftime.
Mount Marty recorded the first four shots of the second period, including three on frame. However,
Jamie Watt thwarted the attempts.
Yanes nearly made it 2-0 in the 75
th minute, but the opposing keeper managed to stop the attempt.
The Lancers tallied a shot in the 81
st and 87
th minutes, but both went high of the goal.
In the 88
th minute of play, the visitors recorded a corner kick, but York managed to keep the opposition from getting a shot, securing the victory.
For the match, Yanes recorded the golden goal. He accounted for four shots, including three on target. Watt turned away all four shots en route to earning the clean sheet.
The shutout marked the program's second consecutive one. On Senior Day, York notched a 1-0 shutout victory over Evangel.
