ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The York University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday, defeating Cottey College 3-1 before falling to Brescia by a 3-0 score.
The Panthers are now 10-5 on the season.
Against Cottey College, York won by scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 25-15.
Liberty Baker led the way with 13 kills while adding a block.
Kaylee Weigel totaled 11 kills while
Avery Schneider accounted for 10 kills to go along with a block.
Emma Kerley totaled nine kills in addition to three digs.
Aubrey Bostick had six kills without an error while pounding out a .462 attack percentage.
Kensey Clifton and
Kenna Tarnowski served up five aces apiece.
Mariah Janda garnered three aces while
Elena Brown chipped in two aces.
Cassie Richardson notched a team-best 24 digs.
Ambar Ortiz had 17 digs. Janda posted a double-double with 14 digs while
Valentina Jimenez reached double figures with 12 digs.
The Panthers led 7-2 after a miscue by the Comets in the opening frame. Up 8-6, Baker slammed home a kill, sparking a 6-0 spurt by the designated visitors. Tarnowski wrapped up the run with an ace, making it 14-6. Leading 21-17, two errors by Cottey College and kills from Tarnowski and Bostick ended the frame at 25-18.
In game three, an 11-2 run in the early going put the contest away with a 15-5 advantage. The last part of the spurt – a 7-0 run – started with a block from Baker and Bostick and ended with a pair of kills from Baker. The Comets pulled within nine, but Bostick and Weigel slammed the door.
York jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the fourth stanza and never looked back. With the score at 17-14, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run. Weigel started the spurt and Clifton ended it with a pair of aces. Two plays later, Baker ended the match with a thunderous kill.
Against Brescia, York played a tooth-and-nail first set but ended up coming up short in the 27-25 loss. Tied at 15-15, Weigel slammed home a kill.
Florencia Felmer served up an ace and a block from Kerley and Tarnowski made it 18-15. Weigel completed the run with a kill. The Panthers took a 25-24 lead on a kill from Weigel, but the designated visitors reeled off the final three points for the 27-25 victory.
After dropping the second set 25-17, York trailed 19-15 in the third frame but got things going with a kill from Schneider. Brown recorded an ace and Tarnowski was credited with a solo block. Another ace tied the set at 19-19. Down 21-20, an error by Brescia and an ace from Clifton gave the Panthers a 22-21 lead. The teams traded points but the designated visitors rattled off the final points for the 25-23 win.
For the match, Weigel led the way with 10 kills while hitting .321. Baker added nine kills while Bostick and Schneider had four apiece. Janda dished out 19 assists while Clifton added eight.
Defensively, Richardson led the way with 12 digs.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they square off against Freed-Hardeman at 8:30 a.m., before taking on the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis at 10:30 a.m. Live stats will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
