ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The York University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday, falling 3-1 to Freed-Hardeman before bouncing back for a 3-1 victory over the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis.
The Panthers are now 11-6 on the season.
Against Freed-Hardeman, York dropped the first set 25-13 but bounced back in the second stanza. Leading 11-9,
Kaylee Weigel slammed home a kill.
Liberty Baker added a point to make it a four-point contest. Up 14-11, Baker and
Kenna Tarnowski registered back-to-back points. Up 18-17, an error gave the side-out back to the Panthers.
Aubrey Bostick took a pass from
Kensey Clifton for a three-point edge. The tightly-contested frame saw York hold a 23-22 advantage before Baker found the court off a pass from
Mariah Janda to make it 24-22 en route to the 25-23 win.
In the third set, York held a 9-6 edge on a kill from
Avery Schneider only to see the home team go on a 6-0 spurt. Down 22-14, Weigel started a run with a pair of kills.
Emma Kerley added a point. Trailing 23-17, Tarnowski and Weigel combined on a block.
Florencia Felmer served up a pair of aces to pull within three, 23-20. However, Freed-Hardeman finished off the set with two points.
York trailed 16-12 in the fourth set but a service error sparked a run. Two more miscues by the home squad and a kill from Weigel knotted the score at 16-16. The Panthers made it a 22-21 contest after a kill from Kerley. However, that was as close as the visitors could get.
For the match, Baker led the way with 15 kills while Weigel added 11. Kerley and Tarnowski had six kills apiece.
Mariah Janda dished out 24 assists and Clifton had 17.
Defensively,
Cassie Richardson had 23 digs. Clifton and
Ambar Ortiz had 10 each.
Against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis, the Panthers lost the first set 25-15 but bounced back in the second frame. Leading 3-2, an error pushed the score to 4-2. Schneider answered with a kill and Ortiz served up an ace. Schneider and Weigel notched back-to-back kills for an 8-2 margin. Moments later, another miscue by the home team made it 11-3 in favor of the Panthers. An ace from Felmer pushed the score to 14-7. Up 17-10, Bostick had a kill.
Elena Brown tallied back-to-back aces for a 10-point lead. A block from Bostick and Weigel ended the set with the 25-15 win.
Leading 6-3 in the third stanza, Baker hammered home a pass from Janda. Tarnowski added a point prior to Oritz splitting the defense for an ace. Weigel added back-to-back kills. After an error by the home team, Weigel went back to work with a point. A block from Schneider and Tarnowski extended the score to 14-3. UP 17-7, two errors by the home squad and a kill from Kerley extended the margin to 13, 20-7. Moments later, the Panthers secured the 25-9 set victory with an ace by Janda.
Trailing 3-2 in the fourth frame, Baker knotted the score with a kill. Four consecutive aces by Ortiz and an error pushed the lead to 7-3. Up 12-9, Baker helped the team get a side-out with a kill. Back-to-back errors, along with a kill by Schneider, made it 16-9. Another run extended the advantage to 20-10. The Panthers quickly ended the match with a kill from Weigel at 25-11.
For the match, Weigel led the way with 15 kills while hitting .314. Baker totaled eight kills while Kerley and Schneider added six and five, respectively.
Janda posted 23 assists and Clifton had 12.
Defensively, Richardson was outstanding, garnering 27 digs while
Valentina Jimenez contributed 10.
