YORK, Neb. – The York University women's soccer team played Ottawa to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon in KCAC action.
The Panthers are now 3-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.
The visitors recorded two shots within the first five minutes of action, but
Harumi Cornejo managed to thwart both attempts. Ottawa jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 9:18 mark.
Neither team could muster much offense until the 28
th minute when
Lorna Campos took a corner kick for York. However, the team was unable to get a shot off on the set piece. Less than three minutes later,
Sofia Villa Monterd tallied a corner kick and promptly connected with
McKenzie Stricker for the score, knotting the contest at 1-1.
Cornejo turned away a shot by Ottawa a few minutes later. The Panthers had a pair of chances to jump on top late in the first half, but
Adriana Castellanos Rodrigo's shot hit the post in the 40
th minute of play. At the 42:16 mark,
Caetana Alonso's attempt was saved, keeping the contest at 1-1 at the break.
Ottawa recorded five shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of play, but Cornejo was up for the challenge.
The Panthers had shots on goal from Villa Monterd in the 57
th minute and another from Castellanos Rodrigo in the 76
th minute, but neither could get past the keeper, resulting in the tie.
For the match, Stricker picked up the goal while Villa Monterd garnered the assist.
In goal, Cornejo played all 90 minutes and stopped nine shots to earn the draw.
