YORK, Neb. – The York University volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to knock off Sterling by a 3-2 score Wednesday evening in a KCAC contest.
The Panthers are now 15-6 on the year, including a 1-0 mark in KCAC action.
After dropping the first two sets, York won the third stanza 25-21. Up 13-12, an attack error gave the Panthers a two-point edge. Another miscue pushed it to a three-point score. Leading 16-14, an error by the visitors and an ace from
Amanda Macias extended the margin to four, 18-14.
Sterling pulled within two at 21-19, but a service error gave the Panthers the side-out. However, the visitors made it a 22-21 contest before
Kaylee Weigel gave the home team some breathing room. An attack error and an ace from
Florencia Felmer gave York the 25-21 victory.
The Panthers jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set. Tied at 1-1, three straight errors by Sterling, a kill from Aubrey Bostic and one from Weigel gave York the 6-1 advantage.
The visitors pulled within one at 16-15, but a service error provided a spark for the Panthers.
Avery Schneider slammed home a kill. Up 19-16,
Liberty Baker hammered home a pass from
Mariah Janda. A miscue from the visitors and a kill from Baker made it 22-16. With the score 22-18, Baker had two kills and an error forced the deciding fifth frame.
Tied at 1-1 in the fifth frame, York took the lead on a service error. Up 3-1, Weigel slammed home a pass from Janda. An error from Sterling and a kill from Schneider extended the margin to five, 6-1. Leading 6-2,
Kenna Tarnowski garnered a kill. A block from Baker made it 8-2. Baker showed her offensive prowess with a kill for a seven-point edge.
With the score at 9-5, Baker found the court for the kill. Tarnowski had a block before an error pushed the score to 12-5. Up 12-6, Baker accounted for back-to-back kills. Two plays later, she gave the home team the hard-fought victory.
Head coach
Irick Gardner's team was led by Baker's 17-kill performance. Weigel added 10 kills and nine digs to go along with four blocks. Tarnowski added six kills while hitting .417 and added four blocks while Schneider had five kills.
Janda dished out 28 assists in the win. Her 15 digs gave her a double-double.
Defensively,
Cassie Richardson totaled 25 digs while
Valentina Jimenez garnered 15. At the net,
Emma Kerley added three blocks while Schneider had two.
