Panthers sweep on day two of Clarke Tournament

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The York University volleyball team registered a pair of victories Saturday afternoon, downing Haskell Indian Nation 3-0 and Clare 3-1.

The Panthers are now 7-4 on the season.

In the first match of the day, coming against Haskell Indian Nations, York held an 8-7 lead but went on a run after a kill from Kaylee Weigel. Two miscues by the home team, combined with two access from Florencia Felmer and a kill from Brianna Lemke made it 14-7. Felmer had three more aces, Aubrey Bostick notched a kill, and Bostick and Avery Schneider combined for a block. After the spurt, the Panthers held a 19-7 advantage in the 25-15 victory.

Up 16-14 in the second stanza, Lemke slammed home a pass from Mariah Janda. Elena Brown had an ace and Maya Hughes notched a point. Tied at 19-19, Lemke had a kill. Emma Kerley got into the action with two kills prior to a block from Kerley and Ronan Merriex for a 23-19 edge. The home team made it 24-22 but Schneider finished the set with a kill, giving the team a three-point victory.   

Tied at 6-6 in the third frame, an error by the home team started another spurt. Schneider slammed home a kill before blocking an attempt. Weigel and Allison Parker recorded points for a 12-5 advantage. Moments later, an error allowed York to take a 19-8 lead. The Panthers cruised to the 25-16 victory.

For the match, Lemke led the way with 11 kills and a .478 hitting percentage. Weigel added eight kills while Kerley and Schneider chipped in six and five kills, respectively. Janda dished out 21 assists while Kensey Clifton added ten.  

Defensively, Cassie Richardson led the way with 16 digs. Janda added 12 digs for a double-double while Clifton accounted for 10 digs.

The Panthers closed out the day against Clarke University. In the first set, York jumped out to a 7-3 lead after two miscues by the home team and a block by Schneider. Leading 15-14, Tarnowski hammered home a kill. Weigel followed it up with a point for a three-point edge. Up 20-18, Clarke had back-to-back errors before Lemke found the court for a point. Another error and a kill from Lemke ended the stanza at 25-18.

Trailing 9-5 in the second frame, Tarnowski recorded a kill. Amanda Macias served up an ace and an error made it 9-8. A 3-1 spurt gave the Panthers an 11-10 advantage. With the score at 16-13, Lemke garnered a kill and Ambar Ortiz sliced the defense with an ace. Up by five, 21-16, Weigel and Lemke posted back-to-back kills. Up 24-18, Lemke finished the set off with a kill.

In a tightly contested third set, Clarke led 13-12 but three straight errors gave the Panthers a 15-13 lead. Tied at 17-17, Schneider garnered back-to-back kills. A block from Bostick and Weigel pushed the advantage to three, 20-17. With the score at 23-21, Janda tallied a kill, but Clarke tied the contest at 24-24. The home squad managed to force a fourth set with a 27-25 win.

Tied at 12-12 in the fourth set, Lemke and Kerley accounted for back-to-back kills before Lemke and Tarnowski stuffed an attack for a three-point margin. With the score at 21-21, Lemke rattled off back-to-back kills. After Clarke pulled within one, Lemke found the court again before Elena Brown ended the contest with an ace.     

For the match, Lemke led the way with 16 kills while Schneider added 13. Weigel chipped in eight kills in the victory. Janda posted 19 assists while Clifton added 16.

Defensively, Richardson led the victors with 21 digs.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday when they entertain Faith Bible College at 3 p.m., before hosting Union at 7 p.m.
