Spires hot shooting surpasses Panthers

YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team dropped an 81-59 contest to Saint Mary Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 4-12 on the year, including 1-10 in KCAC action.

Head coach Tree Burks' team was led by Chris Dixon's 14-point, six rebound effort. Andrew Bennett totaled 12 point and nine boards while Dave Dalge accounted for seven points and five rebounds.

DJ Leaks and Amari Haynes totaled six points apiece. Carl Thorpe Jr., had four points while Dylan Holston added three. Garrett Johnson snagged five boards in the loss. Johnson, Eli Nutting and Terrence Packer had two points each while Devin Carroll had one – to go along with three boards.

York took a 9-7 lead on a free throw by Dalge. A three-ball from Dixon extended the margin to five, 12-7. Up 14-10, Haynes converted an old-fashioned three-point play for a 17-10 margin at the 13:08 mark. Bennett's two charity tosses made it 19-12 with 12:17 to play in the first half.

Saint Mary pulled within one, 19-18, but Dixon answered with a jumper with just under 10 minutes to go.

Down 27-21, Dalge and Dixon hit two free throws apiece. A basket by Haynes at the 3:52 mark knotted the score at 27-27 and Dixon's coast-to-coast rebound and lay-up gave the home team a two-point cushion. However, the visitors held a 39-34 lead at the break.

Down 41-34, Bennett drilled a jumper just 1:41 into the second period. An early spurt pushed the advantage to 12, 48-6, before Dalge cut it to 10 at the 15:49 mark. However, York was unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

For the game, York hit 21-of-64 from the floor. The squad canned three shots from downtown and made 14-of-19 from the charity stripe. The Panthers scored 34 points in the paint and had 18 second chance points off 16 offensive boards. The team dished out seven assists and recorded six steals.

The Panthers return to action Saturday, Jan. 18, when they play at Oklahoma Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
