Ottawa, Kan. – The York University men's basketball team dropped an 87-75 contest at Ottawa Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 5-14 on the year, including 2-12 in KCAC action. The home squad stands at 14-6 overall, including 10-4 in league play.
Head coach
Tree Burks' team was led by
Andrew Bennett's near double-double effort of 14 points and nine rebounds.
DJ Leaks added 12 points while
Dave Dalge garnered 11 points.
Carl Thorpe Jr., accounted for 10 points and eight rebounds.
Devin Carroll added eight points while
Rhino Hernandez totaled seven.
Amari Haynes and
Dylan Holston notched five points each while
Eli Nutting had three points.
Down 7-5, Dalge took a pass from Hernandez and buried a three-ball. The teams traded baskets and York took a 10-9 lead on a field goal by Bennett at the 15:02 mark.
When Leaks found Carroll for a jumper at the 14:31 mark, the contest was tied at 12-12. It marked the last time the teams would be even the rest of the way.
York stopped a 13-0 run when Carroll found the bottom of the net on a three-point bucket at the 9:57 mark. Down 38-23, Bennett secured a pass from Holston and drained a jumper. Holston received a pass from Haynes and canned a three-ball, making it 38-28 with 4:31 to play before halftime. However, Ottawa would lead 47-31 at the break.
Burks' team outscored Ottawa in the final 20 minutes of action, but it was not enough. A pair of field goals from Leaks just prior to the halfway point of the frame pulled the visitors within 16, 64-48. Moments later, Leaks started a 6-0 spurt. Haynes and Thorpe Jr., hit field goals to pull within 13 with 8:13 remaining.
Trailing 79-62, Hernandez found Bennett for a jumper. Dalge's three-ball sliced the deficit to 12 with 3:50 to play. However, that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.
For the game, York buried 30-of-63 from the floor, including nine-of-26 from downtown. The team connected on six-of-10 from the charity stripe. The Panthers held a 36-35 edge on the glass. York dished out 14 assists and secured 11 points off turnovers. The team outscored the home team 38-32 in the paint.
