Panthers split opening day at Dordt Classic

SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – The York University softball team split a pair of games on Friday, knocking off Mayville State 3-2 before falling to Dakota Wesleyan 10-2.

The Panthers are now 1-1 on the season.

Against Mayville State, York trailed 2-0 after the first inning and did not have a base runner until the fourth inning when Nevaeh Reed drew a walk. However, she was thrown out trying to steal, ending the stanza.

A walk to Chloe Lockhart was all the Panthers could get on base in the fifth. However, York broke through in the sixth frame. Emma Morphew led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, she moved to third on a single by Paige Chapman, who promptly stole second baes.

Reed tied the game with a two-RBI double down the right field line. Moriah Hoshowski's base hit to center field allowed Reed to race home for a 3-2 advantage.

For the game, Reed drove in two. Chapman, Hoshowski, Morphew and Reed posted base hits.

Lockhart tossed a complete game and gave up just two runs on seven hits. She struck out seven and walked three en route to the hard-fought win.

Against Dakota Wesleyan, York found itself trailing 4-0 after the first inning. The Panthers broke through in the third stanza. Reed earned a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. After hustling to third on a sacrifice bunt, she scored on a groundout by Lockhart.

Down 8-1 in the fifth, Reed recorded a one-out double to center field. With two on and two out, Morphew ripped a single to the gap in right center field. However, Dakota Wesleyan plated two runs in the fifth to win the game.

For the game, Reed had a double and scored twice. Alex Harwell worked 2.2 innings and gave up five earned runs. Kaitlyn Roe threw the final two innings.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow for games against Northwestern College and Doane beginning at 10 a.m. Live stats will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
