Volleyball: Panthers take first set, but fall on the road to Spires

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - The York University volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision at Saint Mary Saturday evening.

The Panthers are now 12-17 on the season, including 2-6 in KCAC action.

Head coach Irick Gardner's team was led by Brianna Lemke's 10-kill performance. Jassania Joseph added seven kills while Jai Dotson and Emma Kerley chipped in five and three, respectively.

Kensey Clifton totaled 17 assists while Meadow Nusbaum accounted for 10.

Ronan Merriex had four total blocks while Joseph posted three.

Valentina Jimenez registered 23 digs while Ambar Ortiz totaled 15. Olivia Romero accounted for nine digs in the loss.

Trailing 9-6 in the opening frame, Kerley and Joseph blocked an attempt. Dotson slammed home a kill. Two plays later, Kory Anschutz served up an ace. Dotson and Merriex combined for a block, giving the visitors an 11-9 edge. Lemke and Merriex combined for a block. After an attack error by USM, Kerley and Merriex stuffed an attempt. Lemke's point extended the margin to 16-10. York maintained the advantage throughout and Kerley finished off the set with a thunderous kill for the 25-19 win.

Down 12-9 in the second stanza, an error sparked a run by the visitors. Joseph and Kerley added kills, knotting the score at 12-12. USM went on an 8-1 spurt for a 20-13 lead. Kaylee Weigel and Merriex notched points, but the home squad managed to secure a 25-17 victory.

After dropping the third set 25-12, York was behind 15-10 in the fourth frame. Dotson and Joseph notched back-to-back points to make it a three-point contest. With the score at 21-15, a pair of errors pulled the visitors within four at 21-17. The teams traded points and Dotson once again made it a four-point contest at 23-19 with a kill. Back-to-back errors by USM made it 23-21 and caused a break in action via a home time-out. York pulled within two on a kill by Lemke, but USM ended the match on the ensuing play.

For the match, the Panthers had 31 kills and 29 assists. York served up four aces, tallied four solo blocks and notched 72 digs.
