Women's Soccer: York cruises to win with strong offense


STERLING, Kan. – The York University women's soccer team cruised to a 7-1 victory at Sterling Wednesday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 1-8-2 on the season, including 1-4-1 in KCAC action.

York erupted for six goals in the final 45 minutes of action to break open a one-score match at halftime.

In the 22nd minute, Gracie Reynolds promptly fired a shot past the keeper for a 1-0 advantage. 

Harumi Cornejo turned away a shot on target in the 39th minute and York continued to push forward. The Panthers had two more shots on goal that were thwarted in the first half while Paisly Cleveland's attempt hit the crossbar. Gracie Reynolds' attempt hit the post – and if either of those shots finds the back of the net, York has a multi-goal advantage at intermission.

Despite the near misses in the opening period, the Panthers extended the margin in the second half. Just 1:34 into the stanza, Maisie Briscoe found Samantha Bayer for a 2-0 lead. Lise Ravat and Gracie Reynolds connected with Lois Mattock for a three-goal margin in the 53rd minute.

Ellie Reynolds dished a pass to Gracie Reynolds for a 4-0 lead at the 58:09 mark. Just 44 seconds later, Gracie Reynolds found Maisie Briscoe for a five-goal advantage. A foul in the box in the 63rd minute led to a penalty kick goal for Cristina Prats. Ellie Reynolds converted a shot at the 71:34 mark. 

For the match, York blasted 36 shots, including 21 shots on frame. The team earned eight corner kicks and had five assists in the six-goal victory. 

Cornejo played 74 minutes between the pipes and had a save. Katie Box played 16 minutes in goal and recorded three saves. 

Gracie Reynolds had two goals and two assists in the win. Ellie Reynolds and Briscoe each totaled a goal and assist in the contest. Prats, Bayer and Mattock had goals while Ravat recorded an assist.

It marked the most goals for York since an 8-0 victory against McPherson College on Oct. 23, 2024.
