Men's Basketball: Johnson's career night not enough as Briar Cliff edges Panthers

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Jadin Johnson erupted for 34 points, but the York University men's basketball team lost a 97-82 decision at Briar Cliff Tuesday evening.

The Panthers are now 2-4 on the season.

Head coach Mitch McMullen's team was led by Johnson's 34-point effort on 13-of-23 shooting from the floor. He also added four assists. King Solomon added 19 points while Landon Miller chipped in 11 points. Dave Dalge contributed eight markers.

Donn'Yae Ferguson led the squad with nine boards while Aaron Johnson blocked two shots.

The Panthers return to action Saturday when they travel to Sterling for a game slated to start at 3 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.

Down 19-10 in the early going, Shaun Armstrong hit a jumper. Jadin Johnson slashed the deficit to five with a basket. Down 20-14, Jadin Johnson canned a three-ball off a pass from Devin Carroll at the 10:00 mark. 

Trailing 25-20, Carroll netted another shot from distance. A Landon Miller three-ball pulled the Panthers within two, 28-26. York made it a one-point contest after a Dalge field goal at the 2:17 mark. However, Briar Cliff held a 43-37 lead at the break.

The home team held a 54-42 edge with just under 16 minutes to play. Jadin Johnson buried a shot from downtown before hitting two free throws within a 31-second span. The Panthers cut it to 10 twice, including on another basket from the three-point line from Carroll at the 11:06 mark, making it 65-55. 

Facing a 90-74 deficit with less than two minutes to go, Solomon buried a pair of three-point shots, making it 90-80 with 1:16 to go. Jadin Johnson completed his stellar game with a bucket at the 1:04 mark for the team's final points.

For the game, York hit 30-of-68 (44.1 percent) from the field, including 11-of-29 (37.9 percent) from downtown. The squad was nearly automatic from the charity stripe, canning 11-of-13 (84.6 percent). The Panthers pulled down 27 rebounds. The team dished out eight assists and netted 30 points in the paint.
