Men's Basketball: York unable to pick up road win at Sterling

STERLING, Kan. – The York University men's basketball team lost an  84-73 decision at Sterling Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 2-5 on the year, including 0-1 in KCAC action.

Head coach Mitch McMullen's team was led by Devin Carroll's 19-point effort. Jadin Johnson added 12 points and seven rebounds while Dave Dalge and Richard Massey scored 11 points each.

Miller totaled six points and a team-best eight rebounds in 27 minutes of work. He also swatted a pair of shots. Johnson dished out a team-best three assists.  

Down 9-4 early on, Landon Miller buried a three-ball. Buckets from Dalge and Johnson pulled the Panthers within four at 15-11 with 12:50 to go in the half. Thirty-five seconds later, Carroll found Logan Beckstorm for a shot from distance to pull the squad within four once again, this time at 18-14.

Down by seven, Jadin Johnson found Richard Massey for a three-point basket with 7:48 to go. Another shot from deep by Massey off a pass from Jadin Johnson sliced the margin to three, 29-26. Massey's 11th point cut the margin to 37-33, but Sterling went on a 7-0 spurt to close the half.

Dalge's three-point play with 16:25 to go in the game pulled the team within 12, 52-40. After a 10-0 run by the Warriors, Carroll answered with eight straight points. Eli Jones' lay-up propelled the Panthers within 12 at 62-50 with 10:37 on the clock. Miller's three-point basket cut the deficit to nine, 65-56, with 9:08 to play.

A lay-up by Shaun Armstrong made it 74-66 with 4:16 to go. Jadin Johnson's two free throws with 42 ticks on the clock trimmed the deficit to seven, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.

For the game, York hit 26-of-66 from the floor, including 12-of-29 from downtown. The squad was nearly perfect at the charity stripe, canning nine-of-10. The Panthers pulled down 38 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass. York dished out 11 assists and received 44 points off the bench. The team accounted for 15 second-chance points.
