Women's Basketball: Panthers cruise past Larks in final nonconference tuneup

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team cruised to a 95-52 victory over Hesston Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 4-2 on the season.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Destiny Shepherd's 15-point, four assist effort. Olivia Adams and Monique Contreras added 13 points apiece while Amaya Payne and Alliyana Page contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. Lawson Hiltl added nine in the win.

Payne narrowly missed a double-double with nine points while Page added eight. Kiera Parks dished out four assists while Sylvia Valentino recorded four steals.

York jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back. Adams netted the first three points of the game before Shepherd canned an old-fashioned three-point play. Contreras netted a lay-up. Adams and Page hit free throws while Shepherd and Zoe Brown made shots for the 14-point cushion. Up 15-8, Shepherd, Adams and Payne converted inside shots en route to a 29-14 edge heading into the second frame.

Up 32-16, Page and Parks made lay-ups. Page made a free throw before Valeria Costilla's lay-up made it 39-16.  Leading 44-21 after a basket by Alesia Rand, the visitors netted the final four points of the half to pull within 19, 44-25, entering the break.

With a 50-35 margin, Valentino netted two free throws. Yareli Gomez's lay-up pushed it to 54-35. Valentino hit a charity toss, Amaya Payne nailed an inside bucket and Contreras canned a bucket from distance for a 60-35 lead. Contreras hit two free throws and Gomez made one just before the end of the quarter for a 65-39 advantage going into the final frame.

A strong fourth quarter saw the Panthers close the game on a 30-13 run during the final 10 minutes of action. Leading 75-49, Shepherd netted back-to-back baskets. Valentino hit a free throw before Hiltl canned a three-ball. Page scored three straight points before Hiltl completed the run with another shot from distance for an 89-49 edge.

For the game, York buried 34-of-69 from the floor, including seven-of-27 from deep. The team hit 20 free throws. The Panthers held a 50-40 edge on the glass, including a 17-13 margin on the offensive boards. York dished out 18 assists in the win and scored 32 points off 27 turnovers.
