YORK, Neb. – The York University men's soccer team netted the match-winning goal in the fourth minute of overtime, securing a 2-1 win over Southwestern College in the KCAC quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon.
Archford Manduvi scored the game-winner with a highlight-reel bicycle kick to send the Panthers further into the postseason.
The Panthers are now 12-4-3 on the year while the visitors conclude the season at 10-9.
Trailing 1-0 after a ninth-minute goal by the Builders, York quickly knotted the score.
At the 13:22 mark,
Simao Mendes found
Tomas Viralhadas, who promptly rocketed an attempt past the keeper, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Panthers tried to take the lead in the 31
st minute, but
Colton Ruggles' shot was stopped by the keeper. Eight seconds later,
Tylo Van Wyk's shot sailed high, narrowly missing the crossbar.
Ruggles had another shot at the 38:51 mark, but his attempt was thwarted as the score remained tied entering the second period.
Franco Pablot's attempt was foiled in the 64
th minute of action. York controlled the ball and earned a corner kick in the 72
nd minute. However, the squad was unable to record an attempt on the possession.
Tim Schafer's header missed wide at the 80:53 mark and the Builders' last attempt, coming via a header with just five seconds remaining, missed high.
After earning a corner kick at the 92:36 mark, the Panthers continued to control the ball and
Archford Manduvi ended the match with the golden goal with the clock showing 93:25.
For the match, York posted 10 shots, including six shots on goal. The home team earned three corner kicks.
Jamie Watt played all 93:25 between the pipes and stopped one shot. Viralhadas scored a goal and had two shots. Pablot and Ruggles also had two shots in the match. Manduvi netted the game-winner on his lone attempt.
Dominic Griffin, Van Wyk and Schafer also had shots while Mendes posted an assist in the win.
The Panthers return to action in the KCAC Semifinals. The team will take on either No. 1 Oklahoma Wesleyan or No. 8 Evangel Friday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m., in Wichita, Kan. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
