Women's Basketball: York's comeback falls short against Kansas Wesleyan

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team lost a 73-60 game to Kansas Wesleyan Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 4-8 overall, including 0-6 in KCAC action.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was paced by Destiny Shepherd's 17-point performance. Alesia Rand added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four blocks.

Zoe Brown added 13 points and three steals. Monique Contreras contributed six points and five steals in the contest.

Down 10-5 nearly five minutes into the contest, Rand canned a jumper off a pass from Shepherd. Brown found Rand less than a minute later, making it 10-9. Trailing 21-12, Brown connected on back-to-back three-point buckets, pulling the Panthers within three heading into the second stanza.

The visitors held a 35-21 lead with just over a minute to go before halftime before Contreras buried a three-ball. Lauren Perez hit a pair of free throws to make it 35-26 at the break.

After intermission, KWU built a 46-28 lead before Brown hit two free throws. With 5:31 to go in the frame, Shepherd nailed a three-point basket. With the score at 48-33, Shepherd and Amaya Payne made back-to-back lay-ups. A pair of Shepherd free throws cut the deficit to 11, 48-39.

Just 22 seconds into the fourth quarter, Shepherd sliced the margin to five, 53-48. An old-fashioned three-point play by Shepherd with 7:34 to play made it 60-54. However, the visitors netted the next seven points for a 67-54 lead with 4:33 to go. York managed to get within nine, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.

For the game, York hit 21-of-57 from the floor, including seven-of-21 from downtown. The team canned 11-of-19 from the free throw line. The Panthers pulled down 27 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Minjarez's team dished out eight assists and posted 12 steals. The team scored 15 points off 17 turnovers.
