Women's Basketball: Bluejays too much for Panthers

LINDSBORG, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team dropped a 76-46 contest at Tabor College Saturday evening.

The Panthers are now 4-7 overall, including 0-5 in KCAC action. The Bluejays stand at 4-7 on the season, including 3-2 in league play.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Alliyana Page's 10 points and four rebounds. Olivia Adams and Destiny Shepherd scored nine points apiece while Zoe Brown added five markers. Cori Brown and Alesia Rand contributed four points each while Monique Contreras and Valeria Costilla had two points and a point, respectively.

Down 8-0 in the early going, Contreras started a 6-0 spurt with a jumper. Rand and Page converted shots, making it 8-6. Trailing 12-6, Page canned a shot. Brown hit a charity toss before Adams drained a field goal. Baskets by Adams and Page knotted the score at 15-15 before the home squad hit a shot just before the buzzer for a two-point edge heading into the second frame.

Page's basket 65 seconds into the second stanza knotted it at 17-17. Adams tied the game at the 7:41 mark. However, Tabor netted the next 11 points for a 30-19 advantage. A late jumper from Shepherd made it 32-23 at the break.

A field goal to start the third stanza pulled the team within seven, but that was as close as the Panthers could get the rest of the way. The Bluejays scored the next six points for a 13-point cushion and never led by less than 10 the remainder of the contest.

For the game, York hit 18-of-50 from the floor and netted eight charity tosses. The team snagged 27 rebounds. The Panthers accounted for 30 points in the paint and recorded 24 points off the bench.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday when they host Kansas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
