Hernandez's late put-back gives York upset win over Southwestern

York, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team won a thrilling 66-65 game over Southwestern Saturday afternoon with a tip-in by Rhino Hernandez with 13 seconds to play.

The Panthers are now 6-15 overall, including 3-13 in KCAC action while Southwestern falls to 15-7 on the year and 9-7 in league action.

Head coach Tree Burks' team was led by Andrew Bennett's 21-point, eight-rebound effort. Carl Thorpe Jr., posted 18 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double while DJ Leaks added 10 points. Dave Dalge contributed six markers while Devin Carroll had three. Hernandez dished out six assists in the win.

Trailing 16-12, Leaks made back-to-back buckets, knotting the game at the 11:51 mark. Down 29-18, Dalge converted an old-fashioned three-point play. The visitors held a 36-21 lead before Bennett canned two free throws and Eli Nutting made a lay-up, making it 36-25 at halftime.

Down 39-27, Bennett nailed a jumper. With 17:28 to go, Rhino Hernandez found Carl Thorpe Jr., for a three-point basket. With the score at 42-32, Bennett connected on a jumper and a free throw. Dalge converted a lay-up before Hernandez found Bennett again for a basket at the 14:59 mark.

Trailing 55-49, Leaks hit a jumper. He converted a lay-up to make it 57-53. With 7:31 on the clock, Dylan Holston found Bennett for an inside shot. 

The visitors maintained the advantage and led 65-61 before Bennett converted a three-point play with 1:47 to go. After a turnover, York played stellar defense and forced a miss from beyond the arc. Thorpe Jr., snagged the board.

Leaks misfired on a three-point shot, but Hernandez tipped it in with 13 seconds to play, giving the Panthers a 66-65 lead. York's defense was up to the task, forcing a miss from downtown with three seconds to play, sealing the win.

For the game, York hit 26-of-68 from the floor. The team hit 10-of-14 from the foul line and scored 40 points in the paint. The squad recorded 11 assists and had 11 second-chance points.
