Panthers compete hard in day one at American State Bank Sports Complex Softball Classic

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The York University softball team lost a 4-0 decision to No. 11 Northwestern College before falling by an 11-1 score to Briar Cliff Friday evening at the American State Bank Sports Complex Softball Classic.

The Panthers are now 3-7 on the season.

Against Northwestern College, Moriah Hoshowski drew a one-out walk in the first inning, but she was left stranded. Down 2-0 in the second, Emma Morphew led off the inning with a walk, but she was erased on a fielder's choice. Morgan Cameron stole second and Carla Martinez drew a walk. A single by Faith Torstensen loaded the bases, but back-to-back outs ended the threat.

The designated home team pushed across a run to make it 3-0 entering the third stanza. The Panthers put three runners on in the third inning, but York was unable to plate a run.

Howshowski earned a walk and trotted to second on a base on balls by Nevaeh Reed. Two batters later, Cameron walked, but a strikeout ended the threat.

York had opportunities in the fifth. Chloe Lockhart drew a one-out walk and hustled to second on Reed's single to center field. With two outs, Cameron singled to center field, but a strikeout completed the at bat.

NC tacked on a run in the sixth, but York continued to battle in the seventh. Hoshowski singled to left and moved to second on Lockhart's walk. A groundout pushed each runner up 60 feet. However, back-to-back outs ended the game.

For the game, Cameron, Hoshowski, Morphew, Reed and Torstensen had hits.

In the circle, Lockhart went the distance and had a strikeout.

Against Briar Cliff, the designated visitors took a 5-0 lead in the first and added three runs in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.

Down 11-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Paige Chapman broke up the no-hit bid with a double to left field. With two down, Kaitlyn Roe singled home Chapman for the team's lone run.

For the game, Chapman posted a double while Hoshowski and Bethany Wright drew walks. Reed got on base as she was hit by a pitch. Roe drove in the team's lone run while Chapman crossed home.

In the circle, Alex Harwell got the start and tossed the first 3.1 innings. Roe worked the final 1.2 innings in the loss.
