Panthers split day two in Iowa

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The York University softball team knocked off Dordt by a 3-2 score Saturday afternoon before falling to Dakota Wesleyan by a 6-2 count.

The Panthers are now 4-8 on the season.

Against Dordt, York found itself down 1-0 in the second inning. However, the Panthers quickly jumped on top with three runs. With two down, Gracie Torstensen singled through the right side of the infield and hustled to second on an infield hit by Katie Taylor. A walk to M. Cameron loaded the bases for Moriah Hoshowski, who promptly ripped a single to left field, driving in two. Moments later, Neveah Reed drew a bases loaded walk for a 3-1 edge.

Dordt closed the gap with a run in the third, but a strong effort by Alex Harwell in the circle would not allow the designated home team to get any closer. Harwell worked 5.1 innings and had a pair of strikeouts. She gave up two runs on four hits – and only one of the runs weas earned. Chloe Lockhart entered for the final 1.2 innings and had a pair of strikeouts to pick up the save.

For the game, Hoshowski had two RBI. Cameron, Taylor and Torstensen all scored runs. Lockhart had the team's lone extra base hit – a double.

Against Dakota Wesleyan, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Cameron recorded a lead-off single to center field and hustled to second on a groundout. After moving to third when Lockhart reached on an error, Cameron crossed home plate on a groundout by Reed for the one-run cushion.

Dakota Wesleyan managed to score a run in the second, three in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 6-1 advantage.

With the score still the same, Kennedie Anderson garnered a double to the gap in right center field in the sixth. After scampering to third on a passed ball, she scored on Cameron's infield hit with two away.  However, that was as close as the Panthers could get the rest of the way.

For the game, Cameron, Anderson, Paige Chapman and Reed had two hits apiece. Anderson and Reed crushed doubles.

In the circle, Lockhart went the distance and had seven strikeouts.

The Panthers return to action at the Branson Turfs Up Classic on Friday, Feb. 21. The team takes on Central Baptist (10 a.m.) and Ecclesia College (12 p.m.). Live stats will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
