Panthers lose two on Friday afternoon

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The York University softball team lost a pair of games Friday afternoon by scores of 9-1 to Dakota State and 4-1 to Mount Marty.

The Panthers are now 4-10 on the season.

Against Dakota State York trailed 5-0 in the top of the fourth. Nevaeh Reed led off the stanza with a base hit and moved to second on a groundout. After scampering to third on a base hit by Gracie Torstensen, Reed crossed home plate when Faith Torstensen put the ball in play.

Dakota State plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth for an eight-run cushion.

For the game, York posted four hits. Reed, Moriah Hoshowski, Faith Torstensen and Gracie Torstensen. Faith Torstensen drove in Reed. Gracie Torstensen and Chloe Lockhart picked up walks.

In the circle, Alex Harwell worked two frames and had a strikeout. Kaitlyn Roe tossed the final two innings.

Against Mount Marty, York fell behind 4-0 after 2.5 innings. In the bottom of the third inning, Katie Taylor reached on an error and stole second base. After moving to third on a groundout, Hoshowski lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing Taylor to trot home.

Reed singled to left field to lead off the sixth stanza. With two down, Paige Chapman ripped a single into the outfield, putting two Panthers on board. The Panthers were unable to push across a run as a pop-up ended the threat.

York tried to get things going in the seventh when Morgan Cameron rocketed a single to right field with one down. Cameron was erased on a fielder's choice, but Hoshowski walked to put the tying run at the plate. However, a fielder's choice ended the game.

For the game, Chapman accounted for two of the team's four base hits. Cameron and Reed each had a base knock. Hoshowski drove in Taylor for the team's lone run. Cameron, Lockhart, Hoshowski, Carla Martinez and Emma Morphew all drew walks in the game.

In the circle, Lockhart went the distance. She gave up four runs on six hits.

The Panthers return to action Saturday, March 1, when they compete at the Friends University Spring Round Robin. The team takes on Peru State (11 a.m.) and Mayville State (1:20 p.m.). Live stats will be available at YorkPanthers.com.
