Women's Basketball beats Eagles on Saturday afternoon

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team posted a 68-64 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 9-14 overall, including 7-13 in KCAC action.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Ashley Rubio's 19-point, 10-rebound effort. Britney Schroer added 13 points and nine rebounds while Destiny Shepherd and Olivia Shannon had 11 points apiece. Pasiko Hvichiani added seven points in the game.

Down 2-0, Rubio got things going with a jumper. After a free throw by Shannon at the 8:58 mark, Rubio converted another inside basket before Schroer's jumper off a Rubio pass extended the margin to 7-2. Leading 9-6, Schroer canned a free throw at the 6:31 mark. Shepherd hit a three-ball before Hvichiani made a pair of free throws at the 5:34 mark. Up 19-12, Monique Contreras hit Rubio for a jumper, pushing the advantage to 21-12 heading into the second quarter.

After the visitors made it 36-31 at halftime, the teams played virtually even the rest of the way.

With the score tied at 42-42, Hvichiani hit a three-ball off a pass from Contreras. Rubio's field goal at the 3:49 mark extended the advantage to three, 47-44. Holding a 47-46 lead, Rubio netted a lay-up with 3:27 to play. A pair of free throws by Rubio at the 1:09 mark and a Contreras lay-up pushed the score to 53-46 before the Panthers held a five-point margin going into the fourth quarter.

Schroer's free throw made it 54-48 with 7:06 to play. Leading 54-50, Schroer hit a lay-up. Rubio and Schroer made baskets, extending the advantage to 10, 60-50, at the 3:38 mark. York hit its free throws down the stretch, sealing the four-point win.   

For the game, York hit 23-of-51 from the floor, including five-of-13 from the three-point line. The squad buried 17-of-26 from the charity stripe. The Panthers outrebounded the visitors 50-38 and had the lead for nearly 37 minutes. York dished out 15 assists and netted 14 points off turnovers.
