Panthers fight hard but fall in season finale against Bethel

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team lot a 78-64 decision to Bethel on Saturday.

The Panthers conclude the 2024-25 season with a record of 9-16, including a 7-15 ledger in KCAC action.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Britney Schroer's team-best 17 points. She also added five rebounds. Destiny Shepherd reached double figures with 13 points while adding five boards and two steals. Pasiko Hvichiani and Olivia Shannon netted eight points apiece. Hvichiani dished out four of the team's eight assists.

Ashley Rubio and Alyssa Civitak had six points each. Alliyana Page snagged 11 of the team's 34 rebounds. 

For the game, York hit 13-of-36 from the floor, including two-of-eight from downtown. The squad buried 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. The Panthers grabbed 27 rebounds. York scored 18 points in the paint.

Down 15-7 in the early going, Monique Contreras stopped the run with a pair of free throws. With the score at 18-9, Shepherd hit a charity toss. Rubio hit a pair of free throws to pull within six. The teams traded points, with Page connecting on a lay-up at the 1:32 mark. Rubio completed the scoring in the opening frame with two free throws to make it 20-16.

York trailed 39-28 entering the third frame and Minjarez's team played neck-and-neck with the visitors the rest of the way. Rubio and Shepherd made shots in the early going, pulling the team within nine at 41-32. A lay-up by Hvichiani and Schroer, along with a free throw by Schroer, made the score 44-37 at the 4:47 mark. York whittled the deficit to six when Shepherd found Olivia Shannon for a three-point bucket, but Bethel extended the advantage to 54-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hvichiani made a lay-up to get the scoring going in the final stanza, but the 10-point deficit was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.
