STERLING, Kan. – The York University baseball team cruised to a pair of wins over Sterling Tuesday, posting a 19-9 win in the first game before notching a 16-7 victory in the nightcap.
The Panthers are now 5-5 overall, including 2-2 in KCAC action.
In game one, York jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks in part to a seven-run first frame.
Ian Heck blasted a three-run shot after
Jose Martinez and
Nicholas DeMonte got on base.
Cesar Galvan singled and
Trevor Peterson was hit by a pitch. After
Tyren Dorrance singled and
Austin Grant reached on a fielder's choice,
Cameron Reeve crushed a pitch for a grand slam, giving York a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
York increased the lead with a pair of runs in the second. Galvan walked and Peterson walked before Grant smacked a single, plating both runners.
Up 9-1 in the third, the Panthers continued to apply pressure with four more runs. Heck drew a one-out walk and
Nathan Eisenmenger entered as a pinch runner. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Galvan drew a walk. Peterson was hit by a pitch to load the bases and
Ryan Romero quickly unleashed his power with a grand slam.
The Panthers tacked on six more runs in the fourth. Galvan singled in a run and with the bases loaded, Romero crushed a pitch over the wall for his second grand slam. Later in the inning, DeMonte singled home Grant for a 19-9 advantage.
For the game, Galvan led the way with three hits while Romero drove in a game-high eight RBI. Reeve had four RBI while Heck and Grant had three and two, respectively. Peterson scored four times. Galvan crossed home three times while Grant and Romero each scored twice.
On the mound, Heck picked up the win after going 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts.
Sam Maudsley worked 1.2 frames while
Bryce Woodard tossed a frame and had two strikeouts.
Game two saw the home team jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first frame. Peterson belted a two-run homer, plating Martinez. Heck followed it with a solo round-tripper. Moments later,
Connor Larson ripped a double to left center field, driving in Eisenmenger.
Holding a 4-1 advantage, Galvan singled in Martinez. Romero promptly registered a three-run shot for a seven-run cushion heading into the third inning.
The Panthers continued using the long ball in the fourth. With Peterson and Romero on base,
Sam Hodoly tallied a three-run shot. Larson doubled to left and scored on Grant's single up the middle for a 12-1 advantage.
In the fifth, Romero drove in Martinez with a single. A bases loaded walk to Larson pushed across Heck. York extended the margin to 16-3 in the sixth as Galvan and Romero each singled, driving in one run apiece.
Sterling managed to score four runs in the seventh for the 16-7 final.
For the game, Larson and Romero had three hits apiece while Galvan and Peterson notched two hits apiece. Romero led the way with five RBI while Hodoly had three. Galvan, Larson and Peterson had two RBI each. Heck crossed home four times while Martinez scored three times. Peterson and Romero each crossed home twice.
On the mound,
Cole Doebele worked five innings and had four strikeouts for the win.
Nate Dalizon had a strikeout while
Anthony Del Rio pitched the final two outs of the game.
