KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Avila Tuesday afternoon by scores of 18-2 and 11-8.
The Panthers are now 7-11 overall, including 4-6 in KCAC action.
Game one saw the home team take a 5-0 lead before York got on the board in the fifth.
Connor Larsen singled with one away and moved to second on an Austin Peterson walk. The duo stole a base and
Sam Hodoly drew a walk to load the bags. Two batters later,
Nicholas DeMonte belted a single to center field, driving in both runners.
Avila scored 11 runs in the sixth and took the first game by an 18-2 count.
DeMonte led the way with two hits and both RBI. Larson and Petersen each scored a run in the loss.
On the mound,
Bryce Woodard struck out five but was saddled with the loss.
Ruben Colliander struck out a batter as did
Marce Vasquez.
Nate Dalizon registered an out.
York jumped in front with a run in the top of the first when
Ian Heck launched a solo round-tripper.
Down 4-1 in the second, the Panthers plated seven runs. Hodoly earned a lead-off walk.
Cameron Reeve belted a one-out, two-run shot to make it 4-3. After
Jose Martinez was hit by a pitch,
Austin Grant walked. A base on balls to Larson loaded the bags.
Two batters later, Heck drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch.
Cesar Galvan crushed an offering over the left field wall for a grand slam, propelling the visitors to an 8-4 edge.
Avila battled back and scored five in the bottom of the second and two more in the fourth for the 11-8 victory.
Galvan, Heck,
Tyren Dorrance and Reeve all posted hits. Galvan, Heck and Reeve recorded home runs.
Anthony Del Rio got the start and had two strikeouts.
Sam Maudsley posted a strikeout and Peterson struck out two in the loss.
