Panthers pick up two big wins against McPherson

YORK, Neb. - The York University baseball team swept a doubleheader on Sunday, knocking off McPherson College 8-7 before posting an emphatic 17-9 victory in the nightcap.

The Panthers are now 9-11 overall, including 6-6 in KCAC action.

York trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the first but got on the board. Nicolas DeMonte was hit by a pitch and Nathan Eisenmenger entered as a pinch runner. After advancing on a passed ball, Eisenmenger raced home on a double to left center field by Ian Heck.

The Panthers pulled within one in the second frame. Cameron Reeve and DeMonte drew walks. Kodai Namba belted a single to left field, knocking in Reeve to make it 3-2.

Down 4-2 in the fifth, York loaded the bases. Sam Hodoly entered as a pinch hitter and promptly belted a single to right field, driving in Heck and Cesar Galvan. A wild pitch allowed Connor Larson to race home for a 5-4 lead.

York tacked on a run in the sixth as Galvan's groundout allowed Eisenmenger to cross home. He came in as a pinch runner for Heck, who opened the inning with a walk.

The Bulldogs countered with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth for a 7-6 advantage.

The Panthers answered in the bottom of the stanza. Trever Peterson drew a one-out walk. Galvan crushed a pitch for a two-run home run and a one-run margin, 8-7.

For the game, Galvan and Namba had two hits apiece. Galvan had a home run and a double to go along with three RBI and two runs scored. Hodoly drove in two while Eisenmenger scored three times in the win.

On the mound, James McCown got the start and worked 6.1 innings. He had seven strikeouts. Anthony Del Rio and Nate Dalizon had a strikeout each. Sam Maudsley also worked two-thirds of a frame.

Game two saw the Bulldogs take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Panthers quickly answered with a four-run inning. Namba walked and moved to third on a single by Peterson. Heck drove in Namba with a base hit. Peterson crossed home on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Larson smashed a two-run shot for a 4-2 margin.

York increased its lead in the second. Namba singled with one away before scoring on a home run by Heck.

Down 8-5 in the fourth, Peterson was hit by a pitch and took second on a walk to Heck. A base on balls to Hodoly loaded the bags. Larson singled home Peterson and DeMonte walked with the bases full, tying the game at 8-8.

Eisenmenger scored on a groundout. A base hit by Reeve pushed Larson and Ryan Romero home for an 11-8 advantage.  

York pushed across three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the 17-run outburst. Larson doubled home Peterson and Galvan in the fifth before scoring on a wild pitch. Heck's three-run home-run in the sixth provided the Panthers with their final three runs of the victory.

For the game, Heck and Larson had three hits apiece. Heck had two home runs and six RBI while Larson had a round tripper and five RBI. Galvan and Reeve notched two hits apiece. Peterson crossed home four times while Heck, Larson and Namba were plated three times each.

On the mound, Heck got the start and worked 3.1 innings with four strikeouts. Del Rio threw two-thirds of a frame. Jackson Taylor had three strikeouts while Bryce Woodard had three strikeouts while closing out the final two frames.
