Panthers battle but fall against Avila

LINCOLN, Neb. – The York University softball team lost a pair of games to Avila by scores of 10-1 and 5-4.

The Panthers are now 5-17 overall, including 0-4 in KCAC action.

Trailing 2-0 in the first inning of game one, Nevaeh Reed recorded a two-out single through the left side. However, she was left stranded.

The Panthers did not have another base runner until Chloe Lockhart posted a two-out one-bagger to left center field in the fourth.

Down 10-0 in the fifth, Moriah Hoshowski singled up the middle and scored on a double down the left field line by Emma Morphew, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.

For the game, Lockhart, Reed, Hoshowski and Morphew posted hits.

In the circle, Alex Harwell worked four innings and had three strikeouts. Kaitlyn Roe tossed the final stanza and had a strikeout.

Game two saw York snag a 2-0 lead in the first frame. Hoshowski reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Reed. Two batters later, Kennedie Anderson lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, pushing Reed home.

Avila plated a run in the second, third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth for a 5-2 margin. However, the Panthers sliced the deficit to just one in the bottom of the inning.

Paige Chapman led off the at bat with a triple to right field and scored on Hoshowski's base hit up the middle. Moments later, Anderson doubled in Harwell, who entered as a pinch runner for Reed. However, York was unable to push across the tying run.

For the game, Anderson led the way with two RBI. Chapman had a triple while Anderson and Reed notched doubles.

In the circle, Lockhart went the distance and had six strikeouts.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday when they host McPherson College for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
