Softball gets split on day two with comeback win over Doane

WICHITA, Kan. – The York University softball team split a doubleheader on Sunday, falling by a 9-1 count to Morningside before knocking off Doane 5-4 in the final game of the weekend.

The Panthers are now 5-13 on the season.

Against Morningside, the designated visitors pushed across a run in the first and second innings for a 2-0 advantage. With two down in the second, Emma Morphew singled to center field and moved to second on a Gracie Torstensen base knock into the outfield. However, a strikeout ended the threat.

York battled back in the fifth. With two down, Morgan Cameron singled and moved to second on an error. Paige Chapman ripped a single to third, putting runners on the corner. Moriah Hoshowski reached on a miscue, allowing Cameron to score.

Morningside responded with four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh for an eight-run advantage.

For the game, Cameron led the way with two hits. Hoshowski drove in Cameron for the team's lone run.

In the circle, Alex Harwell got the start and had two strikeouts. Kaitlyn Roe worked the final 1.2 innings and had a strikeout.

Against Doane, York took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. With one down, Hoshowksi and Chloe Lockhart drew walks. Kennedie Anderson blasted a three-run home run for the advantage.

The score remained the same until Doane plated four in the bottom of the third stanza.

The Panthers left a base runner on in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames, but Cameron led off the seventh with a single. After a pitching change, she promptly stole second base. Chapman laid down a bunt single, putting runners on the corners. A groundout put two in scoring position and a wild pitch allowed Cameron to knot the score. Lockhart ripped a base hit to left field, driving in Chapman for a 5-4 edge.

Lockhart managed to close the door on the designated home team in the bottom of the seventh, securing the win. Lockhart had five strikeouts in the complete-game win.

For the game, Hoshowski and Lockhart had two hits apiece. Anderson drove in three while Lockhart had one RBI. Five different Panthers crossed home plate.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday when they play a doubleheader at Hastings College starting at 4 p.m. Live stats will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
