Coyotes take game one from Panthers on Friday

YORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team dropped a 10-9 contest at Kansas Wesleyan Friday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 9-14 overall, including 6-9 in KCAC action.

York trailed 2-0 heading into the second frame and quickly knotted the game. Austin Grant led off the inning with a home run. After a Jose Martinez one-out double, Nicholas DeMonte bashed a double, pushing home Martinez.

The Panthers took the lead in the third. Cesar Galvan recorded a double and Ryan Romero launched a two-run homer for the two-run cushion.

After Kansas Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the third, the visitors pushed across five runs in the fourth. DeMonte earned a one-out walk. Ryan Johnston entered as a pinch runner and raced to second on a wild pitch. A single by Connor Larson pushed Johnston to third. Ian Heck's single brought home both runners. Trevor Peterson registered a two-run round-tripper. Galvan singled and moved to second on a groundout before racing home on a Romero double for a 9-4 lead.

The Coyotes plated a run in the fourth and three in the sixth to make it 9-8. KWU managed to score two more in the seventh for a 10-9 lead.

York tried to battle back in the ninth. DeMonte singled and a walk to Larson put two on with one away. However, a double play ended the contest.

For the game, Grant and Romero had three hits each. Romero drove in three. DeMonte, Heck, Peterson and Galvan notched two hits each. Heck and Peterson had two RBI each while Galvan scored twice. Grant, Romero and Peterson launched home runs.

On the mound, James McCown got the start and worked five innings. He had nine strikeouts. Ruben Colliander threw two-thirds of an inning while Anthony Del Rio worked the final 2.1 frames and had a strikeout.

The Panthers return to action Saturday when they play Kansas Wesleyan for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
