Panthers take final game in series with Kansas Wesleyan

YORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team split a doubleheader at Kansas Wesleyan Saturday afternoon, falling 14-6 before winning 4-2 in the finale.

The Panthers are now 10-15 overall, including 7-10 in KCAC action.

York jumped on top in the first. Nicholas DeMonte doubled and scored when Ian Heck launched a two-run home run.

The Coyotes answered with a run in the first and six in the second for a 7-2 advantage. KWU added five runs in the third for a 12-2 margin.

In the top of the fifth, Sam Hodoly drew a lead-off single. Ryan Johnston entered as a pinch runner and moved to second on a Ryan Romero base on balls. Cameron Reeve promptly crushed a three-run shot, making it 12-5.

Hodoly led off the sixth with a single. Johnston entered as a pinch runner and moved to second on a single by Romero. Two batters later, DeMonte singled him home.

KWU added a run in the sixth and seventh for the 14-6 final.

For the game, DeMonte and Hodoly had three this apiece. Reeve drove in three while Heck drove in two. Johnston crossed home twice in the loss.

On the mound, Austin Petersen worked two innings and had two strikeouts. Elvin Ramos completed the contest and had four strikeouts.

Game two saw York take an early 1-0 lead. DeMonte started the game off with a walk. Johnston entered as a pinch runner and took second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Heck drove him in.

Maintaining the same advantage, Kai Namba drew a walk to open the third. Two batters later, Galvan belted a two-run home run for a 3-0 edge.

Up 3-1 in the fourth, Jose Martinez walked and moved to second on a groundout. After moving to third, Namba knocked in Martinez on a base hit with two away.

The Panthers would hold the lead the rest of the way. The Coyotes pushed across a run in the seventh, but Heck shut the door on the home squad.

For the game, Heck had two hits and drove in one. Galvan had a two-run home run in the win.

On the mound, Heck went the distance and had six strikeouts to get the win. He gave up just two runs on three hits and did not allow a walk.
