LINDSBORG, Kan. – The York University softball team split a doubleheader at Bethany Tuesday afternoon, winning 7-4 before falling 12-6 in the nightcap.
The Panthers are now 7-21 on the season, including 2-8 in KCAC action.
York rattled off five runs in the top of the first.
Paige Chapman got things going with a bunt single and a steal. After
Moriah Hoshowski drew a walk,
Nevaeh Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bags.
Chloe Lockhart and
Morgan Cameron each drove in a run for a 2-0 lead.
Emma Morphew blasted a base hit to right center, knocking in two more.
Bethany Wright lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, knocking in Cameron for a 5-0 margin.
The Swedes plated three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within two.
Leading 5-4 in the sixth, Chapman recorded a one-out single and hustled to second on a base knock by Hoshowski. After Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bags, Lockhart drove in Chapman on a single to center field. Morphew was hit by a pitch, pushing Hoshowski across home plate for a 7-4 margin.
With one out and one on in the bottom of the seventh, York forced the Swedes into a double play to end the game.
For the game, Chapman led the team with three hits while scoring twice. Lockhart had two RBI and two hits while Morphew drove in three. Hoshowski crossed home twice.
In the circle,
Faith Torstensen got the starting nod and worked four innings to get the win.
Alex Harwell worked the final three frames and had two strikeouts to get the save.
Game two saw the Panthers race out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Cameron single in Chapman to get things going for a 1-0 lead. Moments later,
Bethany Wright doubled in three, pushing in Reed, Lockhart and Cameron to make it 4-0.
York extended it to 5-0 in the third when Cameron doubled to lead things off and scored on a groundout by Morphew.
Tied at 5-5 in the fourth, Reed doubled to right center field and scored on a double by Lockhart.
Bethany plated seven runs in the fourth to take control of the game. The Panthers had opportunities later in the contest, but the squad was unable to get any closer.
For the game, Chapman and Wright had three hits apiece. Wright had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. Reed and Cameron had two hits each and scored twice apiece.
In the circle, Lockhart got the start and had a strikeout in 3.1 innings. Harwell worked the final 2.2 innings in the loss.
