Panthers take game one from Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. – The York University baseball team recorded a 7-1 victory at Southwestern College Friday afternoon in the first game of the three-game KCAC series.

The Panthers are now 11-16 overall, including 8-10 in league play.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the third inning, Austin Grant led off the stanza with a blistering triple down the right field line. Two batters later, Nicholas DeMonte knotted the game with a single through the right side of the infield.

York took control in the fifth with two more runs. Cameron Reeve singled and moved to third on a base knock by DeMonte. Jose Martinez laid down a sacrifice bunt, plating Reeve. Ian Heck's RBI single drove home Nathan Eisenmenger to make it 3-1.

The Panthers continued to add to the lead with a run in the next four innings. Ryan Romero roped a ground-rule double to left field and scored on a single by Grant.

Martinez led off the seventh with a single and trotted to second on a walk to Heck. Kodai Namba entered as a pinch runner and moved to second on a Trevor Peterson fielder's choice. Cesar Galvan doubled home Namba for a four-run lead.

Martinez poked a one-out single up the middle in the eighth and took second on a wild pitch. He scored on Heck's base hit into center field. The Panthers concluded the scoring in the ninth when Grant singled home Romero, who reached on a one-out double to the gap in left center field.

For the game, Grant and Romero had three hits apiece. Grant and Heck drove in two while Romero crossed home twice. DeMonte, Martinez, Heck and Reeve all had two hits each.

On the mound, James McCown got the win with six strong innings of work. He had seven strikeouts and gave up just one run on two hits. Austin Petersen recorded the three-inning save. He had three strikeouts in the victory.
