Baseball sweeps Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. – The York University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh to secure the doubleheader sweep at Southwestern College by scores of 7-5 of 4-3.

The Panthers are now 13-16 overall, including 10-10 in KCAC action.

York trailed 3-0 entering the fifth stanza, but the visitors quickly took the lead. Sam Hodoly led off the frame by getting on base via an error. Nathan Eisenmenger replaced him as a pinch runner and made his way to second when Cameron Reeve was hit by a pitch. Nicholas DeMonte's single loaded the bases.

Jose Martinez started the scoring with a single that plated Eisenmenger. Reeve scored on Ian Heck's groundout before Trever Peterson drove in a pair of Panthers with a single.

York pushed the score to 5-3 with a run in the sixth. DeMonte posted a one-out single and scampered to second on a hit by Martinez. A wild pitch put both runners in scoring position before Heck lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, knocking in DeMonte.

Southwestern College tied it at 5-5 with a two-run sixth. In the seventh, the Panthers regained the margin. Cesar Galvan singled and moved to second on a base hit by Hodoly. Reeve tripled home Eisenmenger and Hodoly for a 7-5 lead.

York closed out the win with a solid ninth frame.

For the game, DeMonte, Martin and Romero had two hits each. Peterson, Reeve and Heck had two RBI apiece while DeMonte and Eisenmenger each crossed home twice.

On the mound, Bryce Woodard got the start and worked five innings with three strikeouts. Anthony Del Rio came in as the second reliever and finished the game with four strikeouts without allowing a run.

Game two was a defensive battle. Southwestern College broke open the scoreless tie with two runs in the third, but the Panthers sliced the deficit to just one by scoring in the fourth.

Galvan led off the inning with a solo round-tripper, bringing the score to 2-1. The score remained the same until the sixth. Galvan led off the stanza and once again blasted a solo shot, knotting the score at 2-2.

Down 3-2 in the seventh, Peterson walked and Eisenmenger entered as a pinch runner. With runners on first and third, Heck reached on an error, driving in Eisenmenger and Martinez, who had reached on a fielder's choice for a 4-3 lead.
