Braves sweep Panthers on windy afternoon

YORK, Neb. – The York University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Ottawa on Thursday by scores of 12-5 and 21-6.

The Panthers are now 8-30 overall, including 3-17 in KCAC action.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the first, Morgan Cameron and Bethany Wright each posted singles before advancing a base on a wild pitch. Cameron scored on an error, allowing Nevaeh Reed to reach safely. With the bases loaded, Moriah Hoshowski's groundout allowed Reed to score.

York tied the game in the third. Reed opened the inning with a double to right field and went to third on Chloe Lockhart's bunt. Kennedie Anderson blasted a single to left, knocking in Reed.

The Braves scored five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth for the 12-3 victory.

For the game, Anderson and Cameron had two hits apiece. Reed scored two runs.

In the circle, Lockhart got the start and had seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Kaitlyn Roe tossed the final two-thirds of the fifth.

Game two saw Ottawa jump out to a 6-0 lead in the first, but York battled back and plated four runs in the bottom of the stanza. Wright recorded a one-out double to the gap in right center field. Reed was hit by a pitch and both moved up a bag on a passed ball. Lockhart ripped a single through the left side of the infield, knocking in two. Anderson answered with a thunderous two-run blast to make it a 6-4 contest.

The visitors led 14-4 in the second. Gracie Torstensen drew a one-out walk. With two away, Wright poked a single to left field. Reed followed it up with a base knock to right center field to plate Torstensen.

Down 21-5 in the fifth, Reed started the stanza off with a walk and took second on Lockhart's single. Anderson reached on a fielder's choice that erased both base runners before Hoshowski reached on an error. Emma Morphew singled in Anderson for the final.

For the game, Lockhart and Wright had two hits apiece. Wright had a double while Anderson and Reed each knocked in two. Anderson homered and scored twice.

In the circle, Faith Torstensen got the start and worked a frame. Roe tossed 3.1 innings before Alex Harwell had a strikeout in the final two-thirds of an inning.
