YORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team split a doubleheader with Ottawa, winning 11-6 before falling 14-5 in the nightcap.
The Panthers are now 18-19 overall, including 15-13 in KCAC action.
York took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Nicholas DeMonte,
Ian Heck and
Trevor Peterson drew walks before
Cesar Galvan also walked, driving in a run.
Tied at 1-1 in the second,
Ryan Romero and
Sam Hodoly each walked.
Cameron Reeve laid down a sacrifice bunt before DeMonte walked to load the bags.
Jose Martinez singled in two and DeMonte scored on a throwing error. Moments later, Galvan doubled home Martinez for a 5-1 advantage.
The Panthers pushed five across in the fourth to break open the game. Galvan singled and
Austin Grant drew a walk before Romero crushed a three-run shot for an 9-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Martinez was hit by a pitch, pushing in one. Heck's sacrifice fly increased the margin to 10.
Ottawa added some runs late, but York still posted the 11-6 win.
For the game, Martinez, Galvan and Romero had two hits apiece. Romero smacked a home run and a triple while Galvan had a double. Martinez drove in four while Romero and Galvan had three and two RBI, respectively.
Nathan Eisenmenger, Reeve, DeMonte and Romero each scored twice.
On the mound,
Bryce Woodard tossed seven innings and had seven strikeouts.
Anthony Del Rio had a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning while
Sam Maudsley worked one-third of a frame before
Ruben Colliander closed out the game.
Game two saw York take an early lead. DeMonte led off the bottom of the first with a single and took third when
Connor Larson reached on a fielder's choice. After a walk to Heck, Galvan singled home two runners for the advantage.
Down 3-2 in the third, Heck doubled with two outs. Galvan singled in
Kodai Namba, who entered as a pinch runner for Heck. Galvan advanced to second on a wild pitch and Romero plated him with a base knock to right center field.
The Braves answered with eight runs over the next two frames for an 11-4 margin.
Heck registered a one-out double to left center field in the fifth and took third on Galvan's single. Two batters later, Grant plated Heck with a base hit to right field.
For the game, Galvan and Heck had three hits while DeMonte and
Peyton Pinedo had two each. Galvan drove in three while Heck had two doubles.
On the mound, Heck got the start and worked 4.1 innings. He had five strikeouts.
