Panthers split with Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. – The York University softball team split a pair of games at Southwestern College on Wednesday, falling 5-4 before posting a 5-4 win.

The Panthers are now 8-24 on the season, including 3-11 in KCAC action. Both contests went to extra innings.

York jumped on top with a two-run first inning. Paige Chapman led off the game with a single and promptly stole second. Two batters later, Nevaeh Reed smashed a triple, plating Chapman. A groundout by Chloe Lockhart allowed Reed to score for a 2-0 advantage.

Leading 2-1 in the third, Chapman was once again the catalyst. She led off with another base knock and hustled to third on a groundout. Reed's base hit allowed Chapman to score. After a single by Lockhart, Kennedie Anderson ripped a single into the outfield that allowed Reed to race home for a 4-1 lead.

Southwestern College pushed across two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, knotting the score at 4-4.

The Builders managed to score a run in the eighth inning to secure the win.

For the game, Chapman paced the team with three hits. Reed had two hits and two RBI while Anderson had two hits. Chapman and Reed each scored twice.

In the circle, Lockhart worked a complete game and had six strikeouts.

Game two saw the Panthers jump on top in the first stanza. Chapman led off the game with a single and Morgan Cameron followed her up with another hit. A wild pitch allowed both to move up a base. After Chapman scored, Reed singled and that allowed Cameron to hustle to third. Lockhart singled in Cameron before an Anderson sacrifice fly pushed Reed home for a 3-0 margin.

Lockhart led off the third with a base hit. Anderson also singled. Emma Morphew lifted a fly ball to right field, pushing Lockhart to third. Moriah Hoshowski added to the advantage with a single that plated Lockhart.

The Builders managed to tie the contest with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh, forcing extra frames.

In the eighth, Morphew crossed home for a 5-4 lead after starting the inning on second base.

For the game, Chapman, Lockhart, Anderson, Morphew, Hoshowski and Carla Martin had two hits apiece.
